The Horses of Storybook Farm

Baloo
8 year old  15.2 hands   Bay Quarter Horse

There is no one like Baloo!  Always eager for affection and treats, Baloo exudes personality.  It is almost as though he is smiling (or laughing at you) with a twinkle in his eye!  His broad short back makes riders feel as though they are atop a mountain.  Baloo danced his way to Storybook in 2007.

Captain Hook
24 year old   15.1 Hands    Bay Saddlebred

Originally from Kentucky, this outgoing horse competed as an eventer.  He excelled at the cross country portion.  Now his new job is to carefully carry his little friends around Paddington Station Arena.  Although his pace has changed, his vibrant personality has not.  Just remember when you visit the farm, all attention should be lavished upon him and him alone!   Captain has been a member of Storybook’s equine volunteers since 2005.

Tinker Bell
4 year old    7 hands (28”)   Bay Miniature Horse

When Tinker Bell heard that Captain Hook had left his pirating ways and joined up with the crew at Storybook Farm, she was intrigued.  What kind of place could change a person like him?  She fluttered to visit one day in 2008 and never left.  She had found a place full of hope and love – a home custom made for her!  She is our only mare, the youngest and smallest resident.  She is a wonderful companion to those who cannot ride due to medical conditions.

Humpty Dumpty
18 year old  15 hands   Bay Quarter Horse

Life has never been better for Humpty since all the doctors at Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine put him back together again!  This sweet gelding is our most affable horse and a terrific riding partner for children with autism and more severe physical challenges.  We are grateful for him and his steady service to our children since 2004.

Johnny Appleseed
24 year old    15.3 hands
Chestnut Quarter Horse/Paint Cross

After planting apple trees all over the United States, Johnny Appleseed settled into retirement at Storybook Farm in 2004.  His solid personality makes him a great partner for our children who have progressed to more independent riding.  He boasts the loudest neigh and is the first to greet you when it is feeding time!

Sherlock Holmes
25 year old     15.1 hands   Bay Quarter Horse

Sherlock retired from the show ring and joined Storybook in 2002.  He is our oldest horse and to quote Mary Poppins “practically and perfect” in every way!  He is very loving, patient, and dependable.  He is a true gentleman and a sought after mount.  He loves to spend time with the children and is eager to solve the toughest mysteries too!

Atticus Finch
7 year old  16.1 hands   Chestnut Thoroughbred

Atticus was a former race horse whose 2 year career ended after a knee injury.  He won his last race at Suffolk Downs on September 27, 2005.  In 2006, he became part of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation which rehabilitates former race horses to permanent homes.  We were thrilled to welcome him to Storybook in December of 2006!  He has a vibrant personality and always ready for a ride.  His height and active trot make him popular for our older riders and, of course, he is available for legal counsel too.  Just call for an appointment!

Little John
19 year old   16.3 hands   Bay Thoroughbred

Little John is an outgoing extremely friendly horse.  He does not know a stranger!  Ironically, Little John is our tallest equine athlete and his best friend, Tinker Bell, is our smallest!  They make quite a pair.  Little John came to Storybook Farm in the fall of 2008.  We are truly blessed to have such a beautiful gentle horse.

Friar Tuck
8 year old    13.2 hands    Bay Welsh Cross Pony

Friar Tuck left Robin Hood and the band of Merry Men to settle at Storybook Farm in 2007. He is a spunky pony who can jump the moon!  His part time job is competing as a cross country pony, but his true love and full time job is to care for the children at Storybook Farm. Everyone knows he is very special … he even has one blue eye and one brown eye!

Huckleberry Finn
14 year old   12.1 hands    Paint Pony

Huckleberry Finn was our very first pony.  He was living on a small farm in Georgia and needed a little girl to love.  Since arriving at Storybook Farm in 2001, he has had lots of “girlfriends”!  He receives the most mail (email correspondence too) of any animal at the farm.  His personality is much like his namesake – he likes to do his own thing with a little mischief mixed in!  His paint markings are unusual with his face split practically down the middle – leaving one side brown and the other side white!

Tom Sawyer
14 year old     10 hands
Chocolate Brown Shetland Pony

Tom Sawyer is our smallest pony, but he has a big personality, not to mention some big hair!  The children love his wild mane which resembles a lion’s mane!  Tom has been a steady companion for our youngest riders since 2001.  He was a backyard friend to two small boys in Georgia before moving to Storybook Farm.

Stuart Little
24 year old    11 hands     Paint POA

Stuart Little arrived in style in 2005.  He is a fancy little pony and terrific mount for our small riders.  He has loads of suspension and a very brisk stride making him competitive in all relay races!  His previous career was competing in Tennessee’s Pony Club Rallies.  Naturally, he was a star!

Paddington Bear
21 year old    12 hands
Grey Welsh/Paint Cross Pony

Paddington Bear made his way to Storybook Farm during one of his extensive travels in 2002.  He loved it so much that he decided to stay! Never has there been a more docile and patient pony.  He adores children and will stand like a statue for hours while being groomed and loved on!  After spending a few minutes with him, it is not hard to see why he is a favorite at Storybook!

Corduroy
9 year old      13.2 hands    Chestnut Quarter Pony

Corduroy joined Storybook Farm's family of equine volunteers in the fall of 2009.  Originally from New Mexico, Corduroy competed in the medium pony hunter jumper division. His competitive nature is still apparent as he loves to win the pole races in Paddington Station Arena.  He is a "people" pony who has never met a stranger. He is usually seen with his head hanging over the stall door greeting the children while waiting for a loving pat on the neck.  If he was a dog and had a tail, it would always be wagging!  His namesake, the beloved children’s teddy bear, will remind you of this sweet pony.

Gulliver’s Travels
19 year old    13.2 hands   Paint Pony

Gulliver is a “one in a million” pony.  His gentle and smooth walk is very beneficial for riders who have muscular disorders.  He has such kind eyes that match his kind heart.   It was a terrific day in 2003 when he made Storybook Farm his home.  We all love Gulliver!

The Storybook Horses are a very special group of friends that give love in a way no human ever could.  Here are their stories...

King Arthur
The Newest Member of the Storybook Farm Family

18 year old   14.2 hands   Bay Connemara Pony

The life of a medieval British legend is not an easy one.  There was always someone to save and it always required great personal sacrifice. But King Arthur with his amazing chivalric manner always got the job done and even found time to be a very competitive 3-Day Event star. Since moving to Storybook Farm in June 2010, King Arthur continues his reign as a majestic leader and is currently in the progress of recruiting some new members to his "Knights at the Round Table".  So far, Captain Hook is the first to win a coveted spot!
